One of the major problems involved with the barn roof (besides the condition of the roof itself) is that there are regulations involved. We can raise money all we'd like but that money must be used appropriately according to federal regulations set forth by the National Park Service. That means hiring a bonded and insured roofing contractor capable of doing fine restoration work on historic buildings. This is not just a house "some guy owns" where a "bunch of friends" can come by and do the work anymore. Things have changed since December 2005 and the State and Federal governments have recently made it VERY CLEAR that they are watching the Adams Center very closely to make sure everything is done in compliance with Section 106 NHPL 1966 and other rules and regs.

I really appreciate the enthusiasm but things have changed after this past summer and the need to do things to the letter around here is now a must. I'd love to get together with enthusiastic volunteers and a pile of roofing sheet metal and do the job. But nothing around here is quite that simple anymore.

Thanks!

George

You are right about that! I have done a little work locally where historic places are involved, and government rules come into play.

The ironic thing about all this though is that much of the original work was likely done by "a bunch of friends" who just "came around" and built the place. I'm sure not a one of them ever heard of the rules, or section so and so of paragraph 26 which seems to be everywhere the government gets involved! Those were simpler days.

But I guess when it's their money involved .......
