I was browsing the Prospect Place website a while back and discovered the Zanesville Times Signal newspaper article from 1948. It's an nteresting piece but I was really excited when I reached the end and discovered the following:
Quote:
The present occupants of Prospect Place are Mr. and Mrs. Charles D. Kain and their five children, Dorothy, who will be married in the home today; Russell and Freddie; the twins; Walter and Eleanor.
You see, Mr. and Mrs. Charles D. Kain were my grandparents and Dorothy is my mother!

I knew my parents were married at the mansion but the date for the article didn't strike a bell as I started reading it. It is, as the article states, my parent's wedding day. What are the odds that the paper would have an article on the mansion that day and that it would appear on the website nearly 60 years later?

I vaguely remember visiting the mansion when I was very young but it was after my grandparents had moved out. I think I remember who the occupants were at the time but I'll confirm it with my parents before I post it. Even though I was really young (4 or 5, I think), I'm pretty sure I walked around the mansion a bit on my own.

That's amazing! Has your mother shared any stories of her life while in the mansion????? Does she have any photos that she would share with us of the estate in her memories??? I'm so curious to know if they lived comfortably and if they had any odd experiences during their time at Prospect... Please share.. and if at all possible, if you would ever be able to make it to this area, we'd love to meet you! Do you remember anything of your youthful visit that sticks out as you think back?????

I haven't heard any stories about the place. I don't think they actually lived there that long. When I heard about the ghost hunts being held there I did ask my aunt Eleanor (my mother's youngest sibling) if she'd heard it was haunted and she replied, "Do you think I'd have had a moments peace with three older brothers if they thought there were ghosts in the place?" Smile

She told me they didn't have much money in those days so they only lived in a small part of the house to avoid heating the whole place. They also didn't take many pictures at the time for the same reason. There must be some from the wedding but I just remember the 'formal' shot of my parents standing next to each other. I believe it may have been taken on the front portico but it's too tight a shot to see many details. I hope to get home sometime this summer so I'll make a point of looking at their wedding album to see what else I might see.

As I said in my first post, I was really young at the time so my memory of the visit (if it really was to the mansion - I may be completely off base and thinking of some other big house) is very vague. I think I went upstairs and went into a couple of the rooms on the second floor but really don't rmember any details. Still, it's really nice to see that the place is being restored. I remember when I was in high school, the mansion was empty and one of the local farmers was raising sheep on the grounds. I live in a place in Maine that is about the same age as Prospect Place that was rennovated a few years ago. Of course, mine is a much smaller place (7 rooms instead of 27!) and someone has lived here since it was built but I can appreciate the effort that is going in to the recovery after years of neglect.

What part of Maine if you don't mind me asking? I was a navy brat and lived in Kittery. Benn a while since I lived there. But, the husband and I took a trip up that way for our honeymoon. Beautiful area! Welcome to the bord. Smile I would be interested to find out if that was the house in fact. Would be a strange coinsidence. The porticos are no longer than unfornuately Sad

I'm in the mid coast region, about an hour north-east of Portland (and thus a couple of hours from Kittery). It is nice here although they didn't need to have this much snow (approaching 100 inches) my first year.

That's the only part I would hate about living even further east... Stay warm. Smile
